I began a 30 Day Sugar-Free Challenge two weeks ago. You sign up for encouraging emails and try to avoid the higher glycemic foods like pasta, potatoes, rice, grains, and obviously, sugar. I've been doing pretty good, with a few violations. I was at a birthday party for a friend with a small group at an apartment. We all sat at the dining room table together. The choices were lasagna, brussel sprouts and garlic bread. I ate a small square of lasagna and the sprouts. No bread and no cake or ice cream. It would have been rude of me to refuse the lasagna.
Then, several of my own children are having birthdays this month and next. I have chosen to eat their cake on these special days. In general, I've done really well avoiding the off-limit foods. I can eat grapes, oranges, apples, pineapple, peaches, berries and many other kinds of fruit. I avoid bananas, raisins, and watermelon which are higher on the glycemic index. We've gotten used to eating salads, soups, nuts and the allowed fruit.
I got into this at the encouragement of my oldest daughter who noticed she had gained seven pounds at college. Several of us are on the band-wagon, my three oldest girls, my husband and a couple friends. When I am done with the 30 day challenge, I know I'll add some of the foods back in, but I'm going to make sure, when I do splurge and eat sugar, it will be something really good. It feels good to not eat as much processed food.
