I got together with some childhood friends recently. Diane and Vanessa are from the neighborhood I grew up in and we went to elementary school together. The three of us were in 6th grade together but were friends way before then. Krisia joined us in 9th grade, it was junior high back then. Vanessa is Colombian/American, Diane is Jewish, and Krisia is Cuban/American.
It'a amazing how much we can remember, details about things said or done, or special interests we had. I remember Diane's mom made the best chocolate chip cookies and we would have one after school. My mom worked so I was alone for hours everyday. The other moms were at home. Maybe that is one reason I need to be at home with my children. I longed for that while growing up and I think children really benefit from it. We talked about how it was a different time when we grew up, we walked to school, we rode our bikes everywhere.
We're all so different as adults. Krisia is an architect, married with two children. Vanessa is single, no children. Diane lives in Seattle, clear across the country, married with one child. But, when we get together, the differences melt away and we're there for each other.

I've always felt we make the families we wish we had. I grew up with a Mom and Dad and 1 brother. I longed for a sister, begged my Mom to have just one more child. But she was happy with our little family. And since my brother was almost five years younger, I was often lonely.
Now I have 4 girls and 2 boys and I hope to adopt a couple more. I love my big family and I am thankful to be able to have the closeness with all of my children. I remind them when they fuss or fight with each other that they are very lucky to have each other.
I love your blog! So glad you and your friends are still close!

Kathy I posted yesterday about high school friends who are coming to visit this weekend. We graduated 46 years ago (how in the world did that much time pass?) but some of us were friends before high school. Women's friendships are fascinating - I agree with Maureen in the previous comment that friends can become family. These are part of my family for sure. blessings, marlene
That must have been a special reunion!! You all look so young! I love the way you connect with each other, in spite of your differences.
