All in a Day: Laundry, Laundry & More Laundry

Wednesdays mean another view into our lives in the series "All In A Day"

I don't get a lot of questions about laundry. I mean, it's not rocket science...you sort, wash, dry, fold, put away. But, there are some particular things that can be done to help the process go a little smoother. I have found that if only one person in the family handles the laundry, then it is pretty easy to find any given article of clothing you might need. I know when it is Saturday and I need three little boys' basketball uniforms, I can ask Stephanie where to find them. She will know if any of the pieces are in any of the stages of wash/dry/hang.

It wasn't my idea to assign the task to one person. I have a wonderful daughter, Stephanie, who volunteered to take on the monumental job of being our laundress. She's a blessing in so many ways. I'm going to let her tell you how she handles the laundry in our home.
___________
As laundry is my favorite chore, I asked if I could take charge of it three years ago. Most of the time it's a no-brainer kind of chore, so it works out well, freeing my mom up to do things that require mom knowledge. =)

Part of the reason the idea appealed to me was because it would simplify things -- instead of having 5 different jobs, I'd have one area. Plus, doing laundry is flexible. It doesn't have to be done at a certain time each day (although sometimes I feel like it needs to be done 24/7). ;)

Actually, I typically do 3 loads of laundry a day, which isn't a horrifying amount. It's only scary if I miss a couple of days. That fact is a great motivation for keeping on track on the weekends. =)

We're blessed to have this little laundry room, which contains the washer/dryer set, our cleaning supplies, a sink, a hanging area, and an ironing board, plus our freezer. We keep two hampers outside the door -- one for clothes and the other for towels. When I put laundry in the washer, I usually alternate between taking from the clothes hamper and from the towel basket.

Folding is done in a different room -- I usually just take the basket of clean laundry into the family room and work in there. One reason I love folding laundry is that I can listen to audio books and/or Scripture passages that I'm memorizing at the same time. I download free books onto my iPod from Librivox.org. You can tell that my current selection is a good one when I'm completely caught up on laundry. =)

Kathy, You are so blessed to have a laundress! What a precious gift your daughter has given you! What an amazing lady she is! :)

Can I admit to being a bit envious???

Can I also say I MISS having my two oldest daughters at home, helping to keep the home running smoothly?? Things have never been the same since they left home for school/jobs. :(

Now my home is dominated by BOYS! When they do laundry, they don't even sort -- they dump it all into one overly-crowded load! I just close my eyes! :)

thanks for sharing the way you do laundry at your house! I loved the pics of your laundry room!

The laundry is one of my favorite jobs. I love hanging it outside and letting the baby crawl around in the grass.lol It sounds like you have a great system going.
