The Fair

Our county fair just took place and we ended up going three times. Once for Stephanie to play the violin in the performing arts category, one time with my dad to see the exhibits, and one time all of us with my husband to ride the rides. It's a good thing we get free passes to enter. Even though there are fewer attractions each year, the prices keep going up.

Here are some pictures...

Stephanie and Charity on the slide. Charity started crying "He won't let me go" when the ride attendant told her she had to ride with someone 18 or older (Carolyn was with her at first). Then, Stephanie decided to go with her. When they walked to the top, she started crying, realizing how high she was. Stephanie got her on the mat quickly and they went down with Steph having to hold onto her arms to keep Charity from flailing about. Look at the expression on her little face. Sheer terror.

We indulged in a fried onion...

and an elephant ear. Stephanie playing the violin. She received a blue ribbon. Matthew on the motorcycles. Kelly and Mark on the teacups. They make quite a pair on the rides because they both like it fast and dizzy. Matthew and Tommy were in the teacup behind them. Allison, Carolyn, and Kelly on the ferris wheel.
Carolyn and I are taking a break on a bench in the exhibit hall.

The brown corduroy purse on the left was made by Allison. It's so much prettier in person. She lined it with turquoise fabric that matches the polka dots. It has metal rings on the shoulder straps, and an inside pocket. Carolyn made the multi-colored purse on the right and lined it with a coordinating fabric. Both purses were made without patterns, just out of their creativity.
A dress Stephanie made for me...all in one day. I love it so much, I'm making a second one in spring colors.
A needlecraft project by Steve, for which he won a special purple ribbon.

Cool, I love the fair. We go whenever it comes around our area. I love the items that your kids made...very creative. What's an elephant ear? I've never seen one before. Is it like a funnel cake?

Oh man, I so wish I could've gone to the fair with y'all this year. Looks like a ton of fun. Steph, I love your dresses - the one you made and the one you're wearing. :) Great job.

Hi Vicki,
Yes, an elephant ear is just the same as a funnel cake. You can get it with powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar.

Actually an elephant ear is a piece of fried bread dough and a funnel cake is a cake batter dropped into the hot fat through a funnel and swirled around. So one is a bread and one is a cake - but both get yummy powdered sugar on them!

Ah, thank you for that explanation. I haven't seen funnel cakes made, but I did see them advertised at the fair last week.
